Itinerary map

Day 1 - 23rd June 2013 - Greenock (for Glasgow), Scotland

Day 2 - 24th June 2013 - At Sea

Day 3 - 25th June 2013 - At Sea

Day 4 - 26th June 2013 - Alesund, Norway

Charming Alesund is among Norway's most picturesque and atmospheric fishing ports - seemingly afloat on three islands, and, as a result of rebuilding after a 1904 fire, rich in a delightful art nouveau architecture of towers turrets and medieval-romantic facades, with echoes of ancient Nordic mythology.

Day 5 - 27th June 2013 - Olden, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

At the head of three valleys amid the sublimely peaceful surroundings of the Inner Nordfjord, idyllic Olden is the key to a not-to-be-missed journey up to the frozen cascade of the million-years-old and ever-advancing Briksdal Glacier, best-known of the gigantic Jostedal's many icy arms.

Day 5 - 27th June 2013 - Florø, Norway

Day 6 - 28th June 2013 - Florø, Norway

Day 7 - 29th June 2013 - Flam, Sognefjord

Little Flam lies at the southern end of the Aurlandsfjord, one of the branches of the beautiful Sognefjord. From the tiny village you can enjoy a spectacular 40-minute rail journey spiralling nearly 3,000ft up a steep mountain gorge to Myrdal. Flam claims Norway's oldest church (built in 1667) - and with its traditionally decorated walls also arguably the prettiest.

Day 8 - 30th June 2013 - Bergen, Norway

Bergen was one of the great Hanseatic ports, and this maritime heritage is recalled by the 900-year-old Bryggen Wharf, with its splendid museum. The Bryggen is a delight to explore: its narrow streets climb away from the waterfront, lined by interesting shops, colourful half-timbered houses and cobbled stairways, with alleyways and tiny open spaces that beg to be explored. In summer months every spare corner seems to be filled with pots and containers overflowing with colourful flowers that fill the air with perfume. Bergen is framed by seven magnificent hills, the highest of which can be reached by a funicular railway. From the top there are spectacular views down to the harbourside, where cafés, bars and restaurants welcome visitors from around the world. Bergen was the home of Norway’s most famous composer, Edvard Grieg, and the Troldhaugen is a museum devoted to his life and work, including an exhibition centre, shop and café.

Day 9 - 1st July 2013 - At Sea

Scandinavia

KirkenesThe Scandinavian nations share many cultural traits including similar flags and many related languages. An abundance of land, water and wilderness is a common characteristic of the Scandinavian countries, with the exception of Denmark where most of the country is farmland or settlements.

The landscapes and nature do, however, vary across the Nordic countries, with Iceland being a land of volcanic splendour and arctic tundra, Denmark and Finland being relatively flat in comparison to mountainous Norway and Sweden.
